Support ALL Entrepreneurs, not just high-growth

Open the playing field (and support) for *all* startups whether they are high-growth or not. Growth is NOT the only pathway to success. And, one million companies hiring two people in their first year of business is more powerful and less susceptible to economic shifts than a handful of companies hiring the same amount of people.

  1. "High Growth" generally translates to "Venture Capital Funded". VC-funded companies have a slightly higher margin of success than companies funded in other manners, but this success in not very impressive considering how well vetted and how well backed these companies are. Far more significant to our future is the support we provide to start-ups in general. Many, many of which will become companies creating significant innovation and employment opportunities. B-schools and the press tend to view VC-funded "high-growth" companies as the only entrepreneurism in the US these days and dismiss the rest as "mom & pop"; this does an extreme disservice to the vast majority of start-ups -- most of which operate with business values and goals much more representative of American vision.

  2. Interesting point Janice. What you've done is question the whole idea of rampant capitalism with accumulation of wealth as the primary motive. Unfortunately, society's measure of a person's worth is mainly financial. A change in perspective, say one more towards cause and giving as an equal motive, could help counter balance this.

There has be a way businesses with a smaller orientation can band together around this more holistic attitude. Maybe a co-op reinforcement will bring validity to this different perspective. They'll still be smaller, but will be able to have presence and influence of a large entity.

  3. There are many business models that can be successful, healthy and profitable, not just VC model. There are also high-growth businesses that do not fit the VC model (time frame misfit). The government should specially support businesses not served by the VC industry.
