Ask the schools, colleges, universities open some percentage of their meal plans and student food services to local caterers or providers. Help the smaller local providers compete in the student food services of schools.
Support urban farming by funding and education.
Support community supported farms.
Renovate the homeless shelters across the country. Develop new rules. Most of them where I live were in bad shape. Make sure some funding goes from programs for non - profit of the cities to the small shelters which are independently operating and trying to survive.
Mandate truly distributed renewable energy systems(solar panels on the roofs etc.) and encourage local assembly and / or manufacturing. In return more small business contractors getting more work. Plus the more efficient systems and less loss on the grid. After looking for one product online(a dog house) I found it sells for about $230 (list price) and on sale about $130. Then, I looked for suppliers of dog houses. The same product as far as I can see from the pictures is manufactured in China. If I were buying this product, I would gladly buy it from my carpenter/woodworker neighbor at the same price. I have been reviewing the disability statistics. Different sources have different definitions. The figures are estimates which are resulting from surveys of samples. The detailed data needed is not available to my understanding(or not easy to find if available). I believe employee owned business should be encouraged. It is important that start ups understand that they can compete if they work together. Creating a brand and working at different locations independently is even possible while the co-operation creates leverage in purchasing, negotiation and marketing etc. Worker owned co-operatives should be encouraged. In my opinion, all industries" data (at all levels - local, regional...) should be generated "real time" and it should be disseminated to all parties(citizens, organizations, companies, start ups...) for free. This is a big task for one organization for large economy and a large geography like ours and and I believe, all universities across the country could collaborate and achieve this.
